Spent time in Luke 22:39-46 this morning. The Last Supper has concluded and Jesus went to the Mount of Olives, with the disciples in tow ( minus Judas ). Jesus knew what was fast approaching and although He had tried to prepare the disciples for it, they still did not understand.
In the hour of His deepest sorrow, He emphasized to the disciples the need to pray that they would not fall into temptation. Moving only a stone’s throw away, He prayed from the depths of His heart for them and those who would believe and come after them. In anguish He expressed His desire to be delivered from the sacrifice He would become, but He prayed even more earnestly for His Father’s Will to Be Done…
In the dark hours before He did the very thing He came to earth to do, Jesus emulated The Lord’s Prayer that He taught the disciples as they first became folowers.
How many times have I mechanically repeated that prayer? Yes, I want His Kingdom come and daily bread, and so forth, but have I ever considered what took place in those last hours from the Mount of Olives to the cross?
The Lord’s Prayer was actually happening:
Thy Kingdom Come – Jesus, The Son of God, Son of Man right here among us.
Thy Will Be Done – Poured out with teardrops of Blood and nailed upon the cross.
Give us this day our Daily Bread – John 6:35, Jesus The Bread of Life. Do I take in that Life Bread every day, spending time in His Word and in prayer?
Lead us Not into Temptation – Do I realize that this was so important to Jesus that He said it more than once to the disciples on the Mount of Olives? I rarely ever consider that portion of The Lord’s Prayer, and yet upon reflection, every fall, failure and sin in my life has come through reckless choices and giving in to temptations. Such fleeting pleasure with longstanding consequences.
Deliver us from evil – That is exactly what He suffered on the cross and by so doing, on the Third Day Triumphantly Overcame for you and I!
Easter is celebration of Life as God intended before sin entered in and extends to each of us. All that He requires is to acknowledge our brokenness and Believe in Jesus Forgiveness through His perfect sacrifice and power to break the chains of our sin.
Hallelujah! Praise His Name!
